Aloe vera comes from the Arabian Peninsula. It is a succulent: its thick leaves store water and the gel known from cosmetics. It needs plenty of light and little water; eaten, it is harmful to cats and dogs.

Rather too little water than too much; hardly any in winter. Soft, glassy leaves mean overwatering.
